Why aren’t more people with diversabilities living happy lives? Why aren’t more feeling like they belong in society and are part of community life? We’ve been talking about it forever, it seems, but things don’t seem to change much. Maybe it has to do with how we set up our organizations? In this workshop, Sarah Schulman and Gord Tulloch argue that even though there have been lots of changes in community living (policies, programs, projects, etc.), we aren’t really changing anything. We’re just doing more of the same, while making it harder and harder for us to try new things.
Based on their upcoming book, The Trampoline Effect: Redesigning our Social Safety Nets, Gord and Sarah share their experiences of using special methods (research and development) to try to shake things up and create new kinds of services. They share what worked and what didn’t work, why it is so difficult to do, and how they think change may still be possible.
